How to get your local business recommended by ChatGPT and Google AI

More people now ask an AI tool for a nearby business instead of scrolling a list of links. Here is what these tools read, what to check on your own business, and what does not work.

Do people really ask AI for local businesses?

Some do, and the number is growing. People ask an AI tool questions like "which dentist near me is good with children?" or "best place for a birthday cake in Pune" and read the answer instead of opening ten links.

We do not have reliable Indian figures for how many people do this, and we will not invent one. What we can say is that the habit exists, that it is easy to test for your own business, and that the things that help are the same things that help ordinary search. So you lose very little by getting them right.

What does AI read about your business?

These tools do not know your business personally. They put together answers from what is publicly written about it. For a local business that usually means:

  • Your website, if you have one
  • Your Google Business Profile: name, address, hours, services, photos
  • Reviews, and how you reply to them
  • Mentions on other sites, directories and local pages
  • Social profiles

Nobody outside the companies that build these tools knows exactly how each source is weighed, and it changes. So the practical approach is to make all of these accurate, complete and consistent.

Is your profile complete?

Start with your Google Business Profile. Check each item against the real business:

  1. The name matches your signboard.
  2. The main category is the most specific one that fits.
  3. Every service is listed, with a short description.
  4. Hours are right, including holidays.
  5. The phone number and website are right.
  6. There are recent photos.
  7. Reviews are being answered.

The same name, address and phone number should appear everywhere: your website, the profile, directories and social pages. If they differ, tools may treat them as different businesses.

Does your site answer questions in plain text?

AI answers quote text that directly answers a question. A page that says "We offer a wide range of services" gives them nothing to quote. A page that says "Yes, we treat children. Our dentist sees patients aged three and above, Monday to Saturday" does.

Write the questions your customers actually ask, and answer each in a few clear sentences on your own pages:

  • What do you do, and where?
  • How much does it cost, or how is it priced?
  • How long does it take?
  • Who is it for, and who is it not for?
  • What are your hours, and how do I book?

This is what answer engine optimisation, or AEO, means: shaping your pages into direct answers that people, Google and AI tools can use.

How do you test what AI says about you?

Do this yourself in ten minutes, and note the date.

  1. Open two or three AI tools and Google's AI answers.
  2. Ask the questions your customers would ask, such as "best [your service] in [your area]".
  3. Ask directly: "What do you know about [your business name] in [your area]?"
  4. Write down what each one says, and whether it is correct.
  5. Repeat every month and compare.

Expect to find mistakes, such as old hours or a missing service. Those point to what to fix on your profile and website.

What does not work?

  • Paying to be listed. There is no way to buy a place in an AI answer.
  • Stuffing pages with keywords. It makes text worse for people and for tools.
  • Fake reviews or fake mentions. They break platform rules and can be spotted.
  • Promises of guaranteed AI rankings. No one can honestly give them.

How long does it take?

It is not instant. Changes to your profile can show up quickly. New pages need time to be found and read. AI answers also change from one day to the next. Treat this as steady monthly work with a measured result, not a one time fix.

If you would like help with it, our Local SEO + AEO plan optimises 5 pages a month, shapes your customers' questions into direct answers and reports on rankings, traffic and enquiries. See the pricing page.

Questions people ask

Can I pay to be listed in ChatGPT or Google AI answers?

Not in the organic answers. There is no listing you can buy to appear in them. Google runs separate paid ads, but those are a different thing. Be wary of anyone selling guaranteed placement in AI answers. The honest route is accurate listings, clear pages and genuine reviews.

Is AEO the same as SEO?

They overlap but are not the same. SEO helps your pages rank in the list of results on Google. AEO helps your content be used when an AI tool or voice assistant answers a question directly. Good local SEO, such as a complete profile and clear pages, supports both.

Does ChatGPT use Google reviews?

We cannot say, and anyone claiming certainty is guessing. Reviews are public text about your business, so tools that summarise local options could read them. What we do know is that customers read them. Keep reviews genuine and replied to, because that matters whatever the tools do.

How do I check what AI says about my business?

Ask. Open a few AI tools and Google's AI answers, and type the questions a customer would ask, plus a direct question about your business by name and area. Write down the answers and the date, then check again next month. Wrong details show you what to fix.

Will it work for Hindi and other Indian language searches?

It depends on the tool and the language, and we have not measured it, so we will not claim results. If your customers search in Hindi or another language, test those searches yourself. Consider writing key pages in the language your customers use, and keep your business details identical everywhere.
